Piro Patton began playing the acoustic bass as a second instrument while studying vibraphone and composition at California Institute of the Arts. He had previously studied vibes at the Berklee College of Music under Gary Burton.

Piro began gigging on bass almost immediately while studying privately with jazz bassist Charlie Haden and the L.A. Philharmonics Peter Rofe. Within a few years Piro was playing throughout L.A. notably with his own trio in a long standing gig at Jake and Annie's restaurant in Santa Monica. During this period Piro also worked for and studied composition with famed composer (and former Benny Goodman pianist) Mel Powell.

In 1995 Piro relocated to New York City. During his years in New York Piro continued to work with a wide range of musicians from singer songwriters to some of the best jazz musicians in the business.

In 2002 Piro returned to his hometown San Francisco where he leads his own groups, and performs and records with some of the Bay Area's top musicians.

Piro has maintained a 13 year relationship with the choreographer Lisa Townsend and regularly composes and performs music for her Modern Dance pieces.
